Imagination Technologies Launched MIPSfpga 2.0 CPU Education Infrastructure

Imagination Technologies announced the launch of MIPSfpga 2.0, a new version of its very successful CPU education infrastructure. MIPSfpga 2.0 provides a complete set of materials for computer architecture teaching - including complete and open access to MIPS CPUs, allowing students to see the actual RTL code and study the internal operation of the processor. MIPSfpga 2.0 is part of the Imagination University Program (IUP), which is designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to learn from a commercial CPU architecture.

MIPSfpga 2.0 includes two extended kits: Getting Started Guide and MIPSfpga Labs, which provide practical exercises for students to gain insight into CPU design. The Getting Started Guide helps students and professors build MIPS cores on the FPGA platform and then program and debug them. This kit contains the unobfuscated RTL code for the MIPS microAptiv CPU, the reference guide, the Open OCD and Codescape Essentials installer, and other important tutorials. The MIPSfpga Labs suite has a total of 25 practical exercises - 16 more than the original MIPSfpga textbook - including a summary of the pipeline operation, the exploration of the cache, and how to create a user-defined instruction (UDI). The third suite, MIPSfpga SoC, focuses on Linux loading and configuration.

"MIPSfpga 2.0 significantly increased the content of the actual practice," said Sarah Harris, co-author of the MIPSfpga 2.0 teaching infrastructure at the University of Nevada University in Las Vegas (UNLV), an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Nevada. From the system level to operate the kernel.Using the new MIPSfpga Labs, students can begin to modify the kernel itself and explore and modify the memory system. For those who want to understand the cache, how to run the pipeline, how to affect the performance and other problems , They can now learn more about the kernel and find the answers themselves. You can test different methods, really hands-on study. This theory for the first time the theory, practice, and professional operation together, will change the CPU architecture education game rule." MIPSfpga was first introduced in 2015 and has so far been adopted by more than 600 colleges and universities around the world, including Harvey Mudd College, Imperial College London, the University of London, UCL, University of Nevada, Sri Lanka (UNLV) and so on.

"When MIPSfpga was first released, we pushed the new changes in the architecture of the CPU architecture," said Robert Owen, global university program manager at Imagination. "In the past, no commercial CPUs had been offered to academia in the form of non-cryptographic code. After today, we have further expanded the program by emphasizing the depth of practical learning, and future engineers need to have a thorough understanding of the architecture and operation of the CPU, and they can acquire the necessary knowledge and skills through MIPSfpga 2.0.
